Who it’s for

  • Enthusiasts who want the best Insta360 image quality
  • Low-light and HDR-heavy shooting
  • Long recording days

Strengths

  • Largest sensors yet in an Insta360 X-series camera
  • Native 8K at 50 fps for smoother reframed motion
  • Big battery-life jump over the X5
  • Rated to work down to -20 °C

Trade-offs

  • Highest launch price of any X-series model
  • Dolby Vision workflows still need compatible displays and editors
  • X5 owners get incremental gains for a large outlay

The X6 marks ten years of Insta360 360 cameras. It is the most significant hardware jump in the X line since the X4 went to 8K: sensors around a third larger than the X5’s, native 8K at 50 fps, and Insta360’s claim of the first in-camera Dolby Vision on a 360 camera.

What’s new versus the X5

  • Bigger 1/1.1-inch sensors, up from 1/1.28-inch. Expect cleaner shadows and less noise once you reframe a small slice of the sphere.
  • 8K50 instead of 8K30. Smoother motion when you punch in, and room for gentle slow-motion.
  • Three modes in one body. Insta360 pitches the X6 as a 360 camera, a subject-tracking “gimbal” camera and a single-lens action camera, switchable with a tap.
  • Battery is rated at 140 minutes of 8K30, roughly 51% more than the X5.
  • Deeper waterproofing to 20 m without a case.

Should you buy it?

If you are on an X3 or older, the X6 is a big jump in every direction. If you own an X5, the decision comes down to low light and battery life. Daylight footage from the two will be close once it’s reframed to 1080p or 4K for social.

Specs are from Insta360’s launch announcement and early reviews. We haven’t tested the X6 ourselves yet. When we do, it will get a hands-on review.
