Who it’s for

  • Budget-minded buyers shopping used or on sale
  • Daylight action and travel
  • First 360 camera

Strengths

  • First Insta360 to shoot 8K 360
  • Big 2.5-inch touchscreen
  • Removable lens guards included
  • Strong used and discounted value

Trade-offs

  • Lenses are not user-replaceable
  • Smaller sensors than X5/X6: weaker in low light

The X4 was the camera that took Insta360 to 8K. It also brought a much larger touchscreen, a bigger battery and removable lens guards in the box.

Who should still buy an X4

Discounted or lightly used X4s are one of the best entry points into 360 today. In good light, 8K footage reframed to 1080p or 4K holds up well against newer models. If most of your shooting is in daylight, the X4 is a sensible way to save money.

Where it falls short

Low light is the X4’s weak spot compared with the X5 and X6, and its lenses are fixed. A deep scratch means a repair, not a five-minute swap, so always keep the lens guards on for rough use.
